Week 7 – Artist Conversation – Jane Weibel

Jane Weibel’s art was based on memories. Since we believe we remember something, and we think we remember it vividly, we don’t know if it’s accurate or if our mind creates a memory that never happened which led her to creating her artwork more abstract. Jane Weibel’s medium for her project were ceramic, fiber, and objects from her childhood such as clothes, shoes, and some decorations. She wanted the audience to remember their personal memories and learn whether the brain hangs on to this memory or manipulates a new one. With some objects she made she manipulated its shape the best way she could rememeber the objects real shape. The clothes and shoes she displayed were hers from when she was about two months old. Her artwork was more child-like, creative, and abstract. She believes the vibrancy of this creation was very important. She said the brighter the pieces the more able and direct we recall something. Jane Weibel said her favorite artists are Jessica Stockholder and Martail Raysee.

Week 7 – Classmate Conversation – Shannelle Cruz

Shannelle Cruz
20151008_113318
(https://shannellecruz.wordpress.com/)
Shannelle is a 4th year health care administrator major. She is going to graduate this year and is very nervous but still very excited. With her major in health care administration she plans on working in hospital settings but in the office. She didn’t think she could really “gut it” and be a nurse, so instead she decided to work in the office of hospitals so she can still contribute and help. She says her position will help keep doctors, nurses, and patience’s information organized. As of now she works in Downtown Disney. Shannelle’s hobbies and interest include: keeping up with her health, going to the gym, binge watching movies, binge watching Netflix and Tahitian dancing. I then learned Tahitian dancing is like hula dancing, but faster. Shannelle comes from a Filipino background and says she is definitely planning to vacate there soon as soon as an opportunity arrives. As for the question of the week which was: “If you could dye your hair a certain crazy color, which color would it be and why?” She said she would dye her hair blue like Kylie Jenner did.

She said she would dye her hair blue because blue is her favorite color, but mainly because it reminds her of the ocean. She said she would also dye her hair blue because it would make her feel like a mermaid.

Week 6 – Activity – Identity Art

This week’s activity I used Periscope for the first time, and I thought it was pretty interesting. I broadcast four videos that were roughly around 20 minutes. The first Periscope I did was of me driving through Long Beach looking for a place to eat lunch. The second Periscope I did was when I went to In-N-Out. After I replayed the video, I didn’t realize the face I made when I get my food. My third Periscope was of me writing my paper. I actually had a live viewer, Armando who humorously said writing my paper sounded like fun. Lastly my last Periscope was of me on Tumblr. I spend a lot of time on Tumblr and if it wasn’t for me another paper, I would of probably spent 2 hours on Tumblr easily. I followed Glenn Zucman, Serina Khoury, and Armando De La Mora. Serina seemed to take a liking to Periscope and showed off her outfit of the day while she was shopping. I also viewed Armando’s Periscope and saw his cute dog. The 3 famous Periscopers I followed were Bree Olson, Jenny Mourey/Marbles and Matthew Santoro. I saw Bree’s Periscope of her feeding some Koi fish. I followed Jenny Mourey/Marbles and Matthew Santoro because I follow them on YouTube and Snapchat. Sadly, they did not have any videos on Periscope. I thought Periscope was almost as similar as Snapchat, except Periscope offers more interaction.
This was from my first Periscope driving out the neighborhood in search of a place to eat.

Week 6 – Artists Conversation – Bianca & Alice Andreini

20151001_112013 20151001_112016
Alice Andreini painted flowers because she believes symbolism hides behind flowers. The flowers she painted were crocuses and chrysanthemums that were inspired by the gardens her mother created and of some soldiers. Her mother taught her with gardening there’s a focus of space, time, money, and security. With that, she was able to take that and relate to it in her artwork. She believes that her art is similar to soldiers, they are either protective or destructive. The medium she used was oil on canvas. She also answered the question for the day. What I expected to her answer about the primary colors took me by surprise to see how much more open she is. She felt that red is tied to excitement, anger, and romance. For her yellow is a very dynamic, vibrant but yet a neutral color. She feels it’s a friendly color. Lastly, blue for her represents more of a water element but like yellow, blue is also a friendly color.

I also had a quick conversation with one of the artists, Bianca who did “Mezclado”. “Mezclado” is a collaboration between five other Latina artists. They used various mediums. There main goal was to show how they felt their Latino heritage is being is being stereotyped. Bianca said that their artwork was a 2 part show. The first part was inspired by the game Loteria, for those of you who aren’t familiar with it, it’s like bingo but instead of numbers and letters they are images. In Loteria they had different images and made them into how those images are being stereotyped today.  Bianca’s contribution to the second part of the show were the huaraches. Huaraches are traditional sandals worn by the Hispanic culture dating back to pre-Mexico and pre-Colombia. Huaraches were durable and could be worn in any type of weather. In this piece “Estos No Son Toms” or “These Are Not Toms” explains how these hard working Hispanics hand made the huaraches out of leather and sold around $20 and now Toms created a similar style to these huaraches called “Cognac Leather Huaraches” also hand made in Mexico, but is sold for $129-$149.

Week 6 – Classmate Conversation- Serina Khoury

Serina Khoury
20151001_111324
Serina (http://serinakperiody.com/) is a second year student who comes from Redondo Beach and is majoring in human development. Serina loves to play volleyball, going to the beach and is very family orientated. She feels that art is a cool way to express oneself. As for the question of the week, she likes black, gold, and neon colors. To her, neon colors make paintings come to life. Black and gold are her favorite colors, although they’re different than neon colors, she feels black and gold stand out most to her in paintings.

Week 5 – Activity

I usually sit alone in the dark unattached to technology except for my ipod, but since that’s technology I tried to think of what to do. I tried to read and realized I didn’t even have candles. The only candles I had were electrical and battery operated. I laughed a little because I couldn’t belive that candles weren’t even real. I sat on the couch in the dark thinking of what to do. I couldn’t think of anything. I litterally sat there thinking of thinking. Then I started to reflect on how I’m doing social and academicwise. Then I decided to eat some fruits. So I sat in the dark and just ate some fruits because I didn’t have real candles to read.20150926_225045

Week 5 – Classmate Conversation- Aida Gonzalez

Today I met Aida Gonzalez (http://aidagonzalez298.com/). She is a second year student at CSULB with a major in social work and a minor in child development. The question of the day was: “What do you swim in?” Aida interpreted this as “What are you doing here in Cal. State Long Beach?” She said she’s here to get a degree and have it as something she can rely on and call her own. She says this because no one could ever take that away from her.

Week 5 – Artist Conversation – Josh Benz

“Paris”
A collaboration of artists between: Jarand Abad, Josh Benz, Roddy Hernandez, Sery Kwon, Peter MaCaulay, Coleton Kargi, Karen Solis, & Krista Tsukashima.
These artists painted what they were dealing with: the present, past, and made up a future. These artists prepared themselves through mediation and relaxation. They didn’t get much sleep because they worked mostly through the night. They said working in the night gave them more energy and that the atmosphere had changed. It benefited them working in the night because no one else was there to bother them.
20150924_111007
This painting shown above was done by Josh Benz and Karen Solis. Josh said his painting was to show his transition from college to adulthood. He said Karen started the painting by creating figures, as for him, he began painting immediately. The way they worked together was by painting their own area. Josh said Karen painted more passively and he painted more forcefully. He painted over and over his work until he felt comfortable with his art. He said Karen painted the lighting which balanced the painting all together. Their goal was to make the audience feel like they’ve stepped into the painting. From my point of view, their goal was accomplished.

Week 4: Painting

Snapchat-3579162129209385642
I
tried my best to do bubble letters, but it wouldn’t come out the way I hoped. I sketched my name in bubble letters with marker and it came out fine, but when i went over it with the spray paint, it looked like a blob. I kept trying and did layers on layers, but I gave up and the picture shows my end result. At least it’s better than the blob.

Week 4: Classmate Conversation: Kahlia, Milagros, & Steve

Kahlia Cadle

https://kahliacadle.wordpress.com/
Kahlia is 2nd year student majoring in accounting. Her hobbies and interest include music and writing. The question of the day I asked her, was if art matters. She believes art matters because as a musician, it’s used for self expression. She shows that art isn’t just about paintings, it’s musical too.

Milagros “Millie” Herrera (left) and Steve Yang (right)

https://millieherrera.wordpress.com/     https://stevoyang.wordpress.com/
Milagros “Millie” Herrera is a 3rd year student with a major in marketing. Her interest is of the combination of black and white, especially when they are stripes. Her hobbies include soccer, outdoor activities, and cooking. Millie is very open-minded when it comes to art and ideas. I asked her if art matters and she believes it does. She believes a world without art would be too simple. Art is what people create, anything from sandwiches to buildings.
Steve Yang is a senior graduating this semester. He is majoring in Chinese studies and business while minoring in hospitality management and human resources.  He says he will return to school to pursue his masters. He coaches the wrestling team at his former high school. I asked Steve if art matters and he also believes it does. He believes without art, there’s nothing in life and life would be too boring without it.
